"?Germany and Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus is set to be on the sidelines for up to four months after being told he would miss this summer's Euro's, German tabloid "?Bild reports.
Joachim Low, the German national team boss, indicated earlier this week that the talented 27-year-old would miss his second consecutive tournament for the World champions, having being forced to watch his country's triumph at the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, due to an ankle injury suffered in his team's final warm up match against Armenia.
This time, however, the problem appears to be an abductor injury, to which he has been nursing since the beginning of the Bundesliga campaign. It appears to have been made worse in his side's DFB Pokal final defeat to German rivals Bayern Munich, with the recovery time taking longer than initially expected.
Low has gambled on both the fitness of Manchester United's Bastian Schweinsteiger and new Bayern Munich signing Mats Hummels by putting them on the plane to France in a few weeks, however Reus' status was reportedly never going to be risked, as he can 'only run in a straight line'.
Dortmund Director Michael Zorc was especially upset for the player, wishing a quick recovery for the club hero: "That's extremely bitter for Marco.
"Especially with his 2014 World Cup history. Our wish is that he returns to full health."
Reus has also taken the time to speak on his own behalf, posting an update and reasons for being omitted from the squad on social media, stating: "For 10 days, I tried everything with the DFB doctors to return to full fitness and be able to participate in the European Championships.
"Since the doctors could not give a positive outlook looking toward the Euro, Joachim Low and I decided that it would not make sense either for the great goal of the team or for my health to travel to France with the team."
"The most important thing now is to cure my injury completely in the coming weeks."
