Manchester United explore January move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta

Published on: 29 September 2026

Manchester United are stepping up their interest in Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as they assess attacking options before the January transfer window.

The 29-year-old France international is being considered as an experienced addition to the Red Devils’ forward line, according to TEAMtalk.

The prospect of a move has gained momentum after Mateta’s representatives reportedly made contact with Manchester United. The approach comes as the club looks ahead to the second half of the season and reviews how best to strengthen its attack.

Jason Wilcox, a key figure in Manchester United’s sporting structure, is understood to regard Mateta as a player who could bring greater experience and competition to the squad. His arrival would provide another option alongside the forwards already available to manager Ruben Amorim.

Mateta’s Premier League experience and his role as a traditional number nine are viewed as qualities that could appeal to Manchester United. His physical style and ability to operate inside the penalty area fit the type of attacking profile the club is examining.

Benjamin Sesko remains part of Manchester United’s plans

Manchester United continue to count on Benjamin Sesko, who joined to reinforce their attack. Their interest in Mateta does not necessarily mean the Slovenia international has been removed from the club’s plans.

Instead, the club’s hierarchy appears to be considering several alternatives, allowing it to adjust the composition of the forward line during the winter market. Mateta would offer a different option because of his strength, experience in England and penalty-box presence.

There is also a possible connection involving Joshua Zirkzee. Crystal Palace have followed the Netherlands international of Nigerian heritage for some time, with the forward currently under contract at Manchester United.

Palace’s interest in Zirkzee could become a factor in any discussions between the clubs, particularly as Manchester United investigate different solutions for their attack. However, no agreement involving Mateta or Zirkzee has been reached.

The combination of contact from Mateta’s representatives, Manchester United’s interest and Palace’s long-standing admiration for Zirkzee means the coming weeks could provide a clearer indication of the English club’s intentions before the January transfer window opens.

Crystal Palace are due to play Nottingham Forest in their sixth match of the English league season. The listed odds for the game are 2,70 for a Crystal Palace victory, 3,35 for a draw and 2,70 for a Nottingham Forest win.
