Magpies confirm Rafa exit

Published on: 24 June 2019

Newcastle United have confirmed manager Rafael Benitez will leave the Premier League side when his contract expires at the end of the month.

There had been plenty of speculation regarding the experienced tactician's future at St James' Park and on Monday the Magpies revealed they failed to agree fresh terms with the Spaniard.

A statement from the club read: "Rafa's coaching staff, Paco de Míguel Moreno, Antonio Gómez Pérez and Mikel Antia, will also leave the club on 30th June.

"We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved.

"We would also like to thank our supporters, players and staff for their patience during a period of uncertainty.

"The process to appoint a successor will now begin."

Newcastle will now be looking for a replacement as their opening game of the Premier League season on 11th August against Arsenal edges ever closer.

Former Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been previously linked with the job.

Newcastle are 4/1 to be relegated from the Premier League next season.
