Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has addressed his side’s disappointing start to the new Ligue 1 season, with the French champions still without a victory after three matches.
“If you want to argue about who will become champions, let’s do it,” Luis Enrique said.
Paris Saint-Germain have collected only two points from their opening three league fixtures and currently sit 12th in the table. Their results so far have left them nine points behind early leaders Monaco, who have won all three of their matches.
The slow start has placed early focus on Paris Saint-Germain’s form as they prepare for their next opportunity to claim a first league victory of the campaign. Luis Enrique’s comments came as he spoke about the team’s poor opening to the season.
Despite their position near the bottom half of the standings, Paris Saint-Germain remain within reach of the teams above them at this early stage of the competition. However, the gap to Monaco has already become significant after only three rounds, with the leaders holding a maximum total of nine points.
The Parisian side’s next match will be away from home against Brest in the fourth round of Ligue 1. The fixture is scheduled for 13 September, with kick-off set for 21:45 Moscow time.
The trip to Brest will give Paris Saint-Germain the chance to respond to their winless beginning and improve their position in the league table. A positive result would also begin the process of reducing the early deficit to Monaco, who currently lead the championship standings.
For now, the main statistic attached to Luis Enrique’s team is the absence of a win after three games. Two points have left them in 12th place, while Monaco’s nine points have established the current leaders at the top of Ligue 1.
Luis Enrique’s statement therefore comes at a stage when the title picture is still in its opening phase, but Paris Saint-Germain must begin collecting victories if they are to close the distance at the summit. Their first chance to do so will come against Brest on 13 September.
