Ademola Lookman was on target but ended on the losing side as Real Madrid C.F. came from behind to secure a 3–2 victory over Atlético Madrid in a thrilling Madrid Derby at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The Nigerian forward made history by becoming the first Nigerian player to score in the Madrid derby, taking his tally in La Liga to two goals in 12 appearances during his debut campaign.

With FC Barcelona having extended its lead at the top earlier in the day with a victory over Rayo Vallecano, Real Madrid began brightly. However, it was Atlético who struck first in the 33rd minute through Lookman.

The move saw Johnny Cardoso find the Nigerian on the left flank before a clever exchange involving Matteo Ruggeri and a backheel assist from Giuliano Simeone allowed Lookman to finish from close range.

Real Madrid responded strongly after the break, turning the game around within 10 minutes. Vinícius Júnior converted a penalty in the 52nd minute before Federico Valverde added a second three minutes later.

Atlético fought back and levelled in the 66th minute through a superb strike from Nahuel Molina, but Vinícius Júnior restored Madrid’s lead with a fine effort from the edge of the box in the 72nd minute.

The hosts were later reduced to 10 men after Valverde was sent off following a VAR review, but they held on to secure the win.

The result sees Real Madrid move to 69 points, closing the gap on Barcelona to four, while Atlético Madrid remain fourth on 57 points as the title race intensifies.
