John George, on loan to Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, Lobi Stars, died on Thursday, according to his parent club, Mighty Jets.

According to the Mighty Jets, the midfielder passed on in the city of Kaduna after illness.

"The management of Mighty Jets FC of Jos has received with great shock the news of the demise of the club's defensive midfielder, John George, who passed on this afternoon in Kaduna after a brief illness," the club announced in a statement on Thursday.

The spokesman of Mighty Jets, Mbum Ferdinand, confirmed that the player was sent on loan to Lobi Stars until his death and he described the midfielder "as a hardworking and committed professional who was always respectful to officials and colleagues alike."

George was said to have obtained clearance from Lobi Stars to return to Kaduna in order to treat himself following recurring cases of illness.

His last game for Lobi Stars was in the 2-2 draw with Kano Pillars in an NPFL game at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi on March 13 this year.

The player had previously been in the books of another Jos club, Plateau United, before switching to Mighty Jets.
