Liverpool are confident they can negotiate a lower fee for Ronald Araujo as they consider making his move permanent in 2027.
The Uruguay international joined Andoni Iraola’s side on a season-long deal from LaLiga champions Barcelona before the 2026/27 season. His move came after he slipped down the pecking order under Hansi Flick in Catalonia.
Araujo’s switch to Merseyside has helped revive a career affected by injuries. Under Iraola, he has established himself in a new role at right-back, while Jeremy Jacquet has partnered Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk in central defence.
Liverpool are keen to activate the €55M purchase clause included in the original agreement. However, Araujo has not yet committed to a permanent move and is keeping his options open, with discussions expected to take place at the start of 2027.
Reports from Mail Sport+ say Liverpool believe the asking price could be reduced by around 10-20%. Their confidence is based partly on Araujo’s continuing situation at Barcelona, where he remains behind La Masia graduate Xavi Espart in the club’s pecking order.
Barcelona are open to selling Araujo, while the Catalan club could target a move for Tottenham’s Pedro Porro in 2027. Any such addition could further improve Liverpool’s prospects of signing Araujo for a reduced fee.
The current arrangement leaves Liverpool weighing up a permanent deal while Araujo considers his options. A transfer in 2027 would depend on negotiations over the fee and the player’s decision after talks begin at the start of the year.
