Livakovic could make up to 10 Barcelona appearances this season

Barcelona goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic could be given a longer run in Hansi Flick’s starting XI this month as the club manage Joan Garcia’s injury.

Garcia, Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper, has been sidelined for three weeks, and the club are cautious about bringing him back too quickly.

Flick had appeared set to select veteran Wojciech Szczesny for Barcelona’s penultimate match before the international break. Instead, Livakovic was handed his first appearance for the club since joining from Dinamo Zagreb in August.

Barcelona won 3-1 to maintain their 100% record so far this season, while Livakovic’s agent, Andy Bara, believes the Croatia international can have a useful role in the weeks ahead.

“I think he can help the Barca team by playing, perhaps, between five and 10 matches this season, including in the Copa del Rey, given the number of games on this schedule,” Bara said.

Livakovic’s opportunity comes as Barcelona face a demanding period in their fixture list. Although Garcia remains the first-choice option when fit, his absence has opened the door for Livakovic to gain further match experience.

Barcelona return to action at home against Getafe on October 10th. Garcia is expected to be held back for that fixture as the club prepare for a packed schedule before November.

Livakovic’s first start therefore gives Flick another option in goal while Barcelona continue to protect Garcia’s recovery. The club’s decision to avoid rushing their regular starter could allow the new signing to feature in several more matches, including in the Copa del Rey.
