LigaMX President Miguel Arreola announced the new rule changes that will come into play for the upcoming Apertura 2021 tournament on Monday. In a video conference with Mexican press, Arreola highlighted some of the new changes:

The tournament will begin on Thursday, July 22nd. Due to the national team qualyfing for the Olympics and having to play the Gold Cup during this timeframe, teams will have to play without national team call-ups for the first three matchdays. The league will also mantain the 5-sub rule, but in case of a concussion up to two additional substitutions will be allowed. Transfer windows will be increased to compensate with complications due to the pandemic; the away goal rule will be discontinued to decide the team that goes through to the next round in the Liguilla, instead the position in the league table will be the only deciding criterion. Only 10 foreign players will be allowed on teams, down from the current 11, while only 8 of them will be able to be on the pitch at any one time, instead of 9.
