In a new report by Spanish outlet El Mundo Deportivo, it is believed that Barcelona and Dembele are close to a contract extension.

Dembele is set to agree to an extension to 2025, according to the report. Barcelona, for their part, reach an important goal: they wanted to renew the player at all costs and are now very close to doing so. In fact, the Frenchman's contract was set to expire at the end of the year, and Barcelona could have lost him as a free transfer, had they not acted quickly.

In the report it is also mentioned that Barcelona were ready to play hardball with the midfielder: had he not accepted a salary cut, they were ready to keep him out of the squad until next year. Laporta and the rest of the top brass considered that this approach was the right one, as the player did not perform up to expectations when he was signed to a 10.9M GBP per year contract, being often injured and often with poor showings on the pitch. The fact that he was kept out of the French National team for the Euros due to not being physically fit dealt another blow to Dembele and any contractual leverage he might have had.

We'll see if the French star will have better performances this season, even after a wage reduction.
