Carlo Ancelotti has revealed why he took Isco off during Real Madrid's draw with Levante. Isco started at Cuitat de Valencia because Luka Modric was injured in the week coming up to the game.

And, to to many people's surprise, the Spaniard was one of Real Madrid's better players, turning in a superb first-half performance after struggling recently for Los Blancos.

Ancelotti removed Isco, as well as striker Gareth Bale, as Levante completed a comeback to take a 2-1 lead inside 12 minutes of the second half beginning.

Some criticized the move, citing Isco's performance, but Ancelotti said it was not personal and that he merely wanted to utilise his team to keep things new.

“The starting lineup that starts the game is never going to finish it,” he said in his post-match press conference.

“I want to use the five substitutes because I can put fresher people on.

“Asensio has done very well for me. Isco, Gareth and Hazard have had a good game.”
