Lens and Olympique Lyonnais return to Ligue 1 action on Friday after a 16-day FIFA international break, with the sixth round of Ligue 1 MacDonald’s beginning at Stade Felix Bollaert at 18:45 GMT on 9 October 2026.
Nasser Eddy, a consultant for NCI Sport and presenter of the UEFA Champions League on radio Nostalgie, expects a lively match but believes Olympique Lyonnais have the stronger case. A Lyon victory is priced at 2.91, while a 1-2 scoreline is available at 9.5.
Lens have struggled since opening the season with a 5-2 win over AJ Auxerre on 22 August, shortly after beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Trophee des Champions. The Sang et Or have since suffered three defeats and drawn 2-2 with Le Mans, leaving the reigning Ligue 1 runners-up 15th before this fixture.
Their only other recent success came in the UEFA Champions League, where they beat Slavia Prague 3-2 on 10 September. Defensive problems have been a recurring issue, with Lens conceding at least twice in five of their six official matches this season, excluding the Trophee des Champions. Samson Baidoo and Maik Nawrocki are both unavailable through injury for this game.
Captain Florian Thauvin has contributed four goals and two assists in six appearances, but those attacking figures have not compensated for the defensive errors. Lens continue to play positively, averaging 8.5 corners across their past four competitive matches, while a 2-0 friendly victory over Standard de Liege last Friday offered some encouragement to Yannick Cahuzak’s team and Mathieu Udol’s team-mates.
Lyon arrive as AS Monaco’s closest challengers and remain unbeaten after five Ligue 1 matches. Paulo Fonseca’s side began their campaign in early August with Champions League qualifying, but missed out on the league phase after losing to Fenerbahce. They have also lost Malick Fofana and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Despite those setbacks, Lyon beat Anderlecht 2-1 in their Europa League opener before defeating Stade Rennais 4-0. They have the joint-best attack, alongside Strasbourg, and the best defence in the division. Their aggressive approach has produced nearly 15 shots per league match.
The clubs met three times last season. Each won away in Ligue 1, while their Coupe de France meeting finished 2-2 before Lens prevailed 5-4 on penalties. Lyon are unbeaten in their past two league visits to Stade Felix Bollaert and lead the last 20 meetings, with nine wins to Lens’ seven and four draws.
Ernest Nuamah is the key player to watch. The Ghana international has scored three goals and provided one assist in his past three Ligue 1 matches, including a double against Stade Rennais. However, Ghana lost both of their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, including a 4-2 home defeat by Gambia despite Nuamah scoring from the penalty spot.
The quoted markets include both teams to score at 1.44, Lens to win more than 6.5 corners at 2.01, Thauvin to score at 2.8 and Nuamah at 3.7. Odds may change.
