La Liga: Barca held by Celta; Atletico win

Barcelona failed to stretch their lead at the top of the Liga table to seven points as Celta Vigo held them to a 2-2 draw in a fine match at the Bernabeu.

The visitors stunned the Camp Nou after 20 minutes when Daniel Wass and Iago Aspas combined to set up Maxi Gomez, who was denied by Marc-Andre Ter Stegen only for Aspas to volley home the rebound.

Their lead, however, lasted less than two minutes as Luis Suarez and Paulinho set up an unmarked Lionel Messi to finish past Ruben Blanco.

Three minutes later, Suarez thought he had put the Liga leaders in front only for an offside flag to deny him after Messi had provided the through ball.

Barca did take the lead just after the hour when Suarez touched home a low Jordi Alba cross, and they almost made it 3-1 within moments but Messi's header was superbly saved by Blanco.

Twenty minutes from time, however, the scores were level again as Iago Aspas raced down the right, with Samuel Umtiti appearing to pull a hamstring as he tried to track him, and his unselfish cutback was smashed into the roof of the net by Maxi Gomes.

The result could see second-placed Valencia move to within two points of the leaders if they beat Getafe on Sunday.

Later on Saturday, Atletico Madrid later cut the gap on Barcelona to six points with a 2-1 comeback win against Real Sociedad.

The visitors took a 28th-minute lead at the Wanda Metropolitano when Mikel Oyarzabal was brought down by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Willian Jose converted from the spot to score in four consecutive league games for the first time, but Atletico levelled when Saul Niguez set up Filipe Luis after 62 minutes.

Atletico pressed for a winner and it came three minutes from time, Saul again the provider as Antoine Griezmann stroked home his fourth goal in three games.
