Kylian Mbappe could leave Real Madrid in 2027, with Liverpool linked

Kylian Mbappe is reportedly planning to leave Real Madrid at the end of the 2026-27 season, with Liverpool identified as his preferred destination in the English Premier League.

Football insider Francois Gallardo claimed on 6 October that the France forward is unhappy with the club and has become disillusioned with the atmosphere in the dressing room. He also said Real Madrid would not stand in his way and that Mbappe’s next career move could be to England.

Gallardo later suggested Liverpool could offer up to 250 million euros for the 26-year-old, who reportedly views the club as his priority option. However, the claims have not yet been confirmed by authoritative sources.

There has also been speculation that Liverpool representatives recently contacted Mbappe’s mother and agent, Fayza Lamari. Mbappe came close to joining Liverpool in 2017, before choosing Paris Saint-Germain. He has previously said Lamari visited Anfield and was shocked by what she saw, while he also met then-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Tensions at Real Madrid

A report by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo said some Real Madrid players and club officials are frustrated by Mbappe’s conduct. One source of irritation was his absence from the club’s training base during the international break.

Mbappe returned early from the France squad because of an injury but, unlike Federico Valverde and Ibrahima Konate, chose not to continue working at the club. Instead, he travelled and posted photographs from his trips. Some at Real Madrid believe the forward is too focused on himself and not sufficiently committed to the team’s success, according to Mundo Deportivo and French newspaper L'Equipe.

His visit to a nightclub while recovering from the injury reportedly caused particular annoyance.

According to Cadena SER, dissatisfaction also exists on Mbappe’s side. Gallardo said the player still distrusts Real Madrid’s medical staff after an earlier incident in which club doctors allegedly treated the wrong knee. That may help explain why he is not completing his rehabilitation with the club.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is also reported to have delayed a meeting with Mbappe’s representatives about a new contract. Journalist Juan Jesus claims the club’s position is clear: if Mbappe does not sign a new deal in summer 2027, he will be placed on the transfer list. Real Madrid want to avoid allowing the player to enter the final year of his contract, when his transfer value could fall sharply.

Other Premier League options

Liverpool would not be the only possible suitor. Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City could all afford Mbappe, although Manchester City’s current financial situation may make a major deal unlikely in the coming years.

Chelsea have developed a reputation for spending heavily, while Arsenal need a striker and Mbappe’s arrival would assist manager Mikel Arteta, who recently extended his contract.

The 250m-euro fee is considered affordable for Liverpool, who spent half a billion euros on transfers last year and paid 125 million euros for Bradley Barcola this summer.

Mbappe has already played for Paris Saint-Germain and is unlikely to return after his difficult departure. A move to Saudi Arabia at the peak of his career is viewed as doubtful, leaving the Premier League as the most plausible alternative.

However, the reports may also be part of negotiations over a new Real Madrid contract. Mbappe’s representatives could have used the alleged Liverpool contact as leverage, meaning both a departure and a renewal remain possible.
