Karim Matmour has been proposed for a role in Brahim Hemdani’s Algeria coaching staff by former international team-mate Antar Yahia, according to journalist Chouaib Kahoul of El Khabar.
The former Algeria winger, who won 30 caps and scored 2 goals, could join a technical team already expected to include another ex-international, Nadir Belhadj.
Belhadj is strongly tipped to become Hemdani’s second assistant, after Yahia, while Matmour would become the fourth former Algeria player involved in the staff. The position being considered for Matmour has not been disclosed.
If the appointments go ahead, Algeria’s squad would be overseen in November by a coaching structure made up almost entirely of former national team players. The Fennecs are due to face Togo twice in the third and fourth rounds of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Algeria will host the Eperviers on 14 November at the Hocine Ait Ahmed Stadium in Tizi-Ouzou, before travelling to the Kegue Stadium in Lome three days later.
Matmour holds a UEFA A Licence and has been without a contract for three years. He began his coaching career at Kehler FV, working successively as an assistant, head coach and adviser.
He then moved into scouting with Bayer Leverkusen before becoming an assistant with the Algeria under-23 side. From September 2022 to October 2023, he also worked as an assistant to Madjid Bougherra with the Algeria A’ national team.
Matmour has regularly worked as a consultant for AL24 News, where he discussed Algeria’s performances during the 2026 World Cup. His name has also been mentioned in connection with the sporting director’s role at MC Alger.
The Algeria staff could undergo further changes, with a new goalkeeping coach, a performance analyst and video analysts also reportedly expected to be recruited.
The proposed arrivals would add to efforts to strengthen Hemdani’s backroom team ahead of the November international window, with Algeria’s two matches against Togo providing the next competitive test in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
