Juventus’ late-window plan hinges on Juan Cabal transfer as Nicolas Tagliafico agrees terms

Published on: 31 August 2026

Juventus have reached an agreement with Lyon left-back Nicolas Tagliafico over personal terms, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

The move for the Argentina international is expected to go ahead if Juan Cabal completes a transfer to Atalanta before the transfer window closes. Tagliafico would then join Juventus as the Turin club look to strengthen at left-back.

Tagliafico turned 34 on 31 August and has been with Lyon since 2022. The experienced defender’s current contract with the French club expires next summer, meaning Juventus could secure his arrival while he still has one year remaining on his existing deal.

The agreement over personal terms represents an important step, but the transfer is dependent on Cabal’s proposed move to Atalanta being completed in time. Until that happens, Tagliafico’s move to Juventus remains conditional rather than final.

Tagliafico began his professional career in Argentina, representing Banfield and Independiente before moving to Europe. He has since established himself as an experienced full-back and was part of Argentina’s World Cup-winning side.

The defender has spent the past three years at Lyon, where he has continued to provide experience on the left side of defence. His contract situation and estimated market value make him an available option for Juventus as the deadline approaches.

Transfermarkt values Tagliafico at €4m. The figure reflects the player’s age and the fact that his Lyon contract is due to expire next summer, while his international experience and long career at the highest level add to his appeal.

For Juventus, the proposed deal is tied directly to movement elsewhere in their squad. Cabal’s potential switch to Atalanta would create the space for Tagliafico to arrive, with the Italian club having already agreed terms with the former World Cup winner.

At this stage, the two clubs have not been reported to have completed the transfer. The immediate focus is therefore on whether Cabal can finalise his move to Atalanta before the transfer window shuts, allowing Juventus to proceed with their plan for Tagliafico.

If the conditions are met, the Argentina defender would leave Lyon after joining the club in 2022 and continue his career in Italy with Juventus.
