Julian Draxler: I Was So Close to Joining Juventus Last Summer

Published on: 02 June 2016

"?Wolfsburg's Julian Draxler has told "?Gazzetta World that he still wonders how different his career would be if he had moved to Juventus instead.

The winger joined Wolfsburg from fellow Bundesliga side Schalke for £27m in August 2015.

Draxler had been in negotiations with Serie A outfit Juventus about a potential move, but says that Schalke and Juve could not reach an agreement over a transfer fee.

And the 22-year-old says that, with hindsight, remaining in Germany was the right decision in the end.

"For me it was an honour that Juventus wanted me, and I was trying for so long to make it happen," Draxler said.

"It is a club that I have always followed with interest. In August there were many meetings, they were looking to find an agreement with Schalke on the price.

"I was able to reach an agreement with the Bianconeri, but the two clubs did not manage to reach one.

"At the last minute Wolfsburg sold [Kevin] De Bruyne and contacted me about replacing him.

"This is a great club, that last year won two trophies, the German Cup and Supercup, and it meant I could stay in Germany, remaining closer to the national side.

"Wolfsburg and Schalke came to an agreement immediately, and so I decided to accept the second option that was presented to me.

"If the negotiations with Juventus were shorter, I would probably be in Turin.

"Here in Wolfsburg the atmosphere around the club is a lot more tranquil. More serene. Even the media pressure is less intense.

"It is for this reason that I decided to come come here, to grow in a calmer place. I am convinced that coming here was the right decision."

Draxler made 35 appearances for Wolsburg in his debut campaign, and is part of Germany's 23-man squad for the upcoming Euro 2016 Championships in France
