"?It's safe to say that the current mood surrounding the England national team is one of general embarrassment and dejection.
Having been knocked out of Euro 2016 by minnows Iceland after some very unconvincing performances in the group stage, first Sam Allardyce and secondly Gareth Southgate have stuck by the players that failed so miserably in the summer.
While the team has picked up victories against Slovakia and Malta and also drawn in Slovenia, the manner of the performances has continued to dishearten fans, many of whom prefer to see their club teams in action rather than their national team.
And according to one journalist, the state of the England's team was so bad during the summer that one player asked their agent to get them out of the situation.
Speaking to "?Radio 5 Live ahead of England's game with Scotland, Jim White of the Daily Telegraph explained how one player was eager to avoid any potential embarrassment.
"There was a player in the Euros this year who, when England arrived in France, rang his agent and said 'can you get me out of this?'. That, to me, is extraordinary.
"Is this a mindset amongst the Premier League that that international football isn't as important and Champions League football or Premier League football? I don't know. Is it a collective thing? I don't know."
While England are widely expected to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, fans are not optimistic of any kind of success at the competition, despite the emergence of some promising English talent in the past few years.
