Former Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu has hailed Victor Osimhen as “the best striker in the world” following the Nigerian forward’s stunning hat-trick for Galatasaray in their 3-0 victory over Ajax in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, writes Nigeriasoccernet.com.
Osimhen, who has continued to dominate the European stage since joining Galatasaray, delivered a breathtaking performance, scoring all three goals in the second half. His first came through a powerful diving header from Leroy Sané’s precise cross, while he calmly converted two penalties to complete his hat-trick.
The 2023 African Player of the Year has now scored 12 goals in his last eight European appearances for Galatasaray, underlining his status as one of the continent’s most lethal finishers.
Reacting to his performance, Ogu took to his X (formerly Twitter) account, writing simply:
“Osimhen is the best striker in the world.”
Osimhen has been in sensational form since returning from injury, finding the back of the net in each of Galatasaray’s last three Champions League fixtures, against Liverpool, Bodø/Glimt, and now Ajax, after missing their opening group game.
His superb display earned him both the Player of the Match award and the match ball.
Osimhen’s blistering form is also a major boost for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, whose team will face Gabon next Thursday in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoff in Morocco.
The former Napoli star, who scored a hat-trick in Nigeria’s 4–0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo during the final group stage, will be central to the country’s hopes of progressing to the next round.
Osimhen, a 2022/2023 Serie A winner, also remains in contention for the 2024 African Player of the Year award, where he will go head-to-head with Mohamed Salah, Serhou Guirassy, and Achraf Hakimi.
