Nigeria forward Janet Akekoromowei says the Falconets are determined to win the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after reaching the quarter-finals with a 3-0 victory over England.
Moses Aduku’s side overcame England’s Young Lionesses on Thursday to secure their place in the last eight and remain on course for a historic triumph.
Nigeria will face Colombia in the quarter-final in Lodz on Sunday afternoon, with a semi-final place at stake.
Colombia advanced after beating tournament hosts Poland 1-0 in their Round of 16 tie. Their victory set up a meeting with Nigeria, who are seeking to go beyond their previous best performances in the competition.
Akekoromowei scored Nigeria’s second goal against England and was named player of the match for her contribution to the victory.
The Benfica of Portugal striker says the team’s ambition is clear as they prepare for their next challenge.
“The reason why we are here is to take the Cup home,” Akekoromowei told FIFA.
“We are going to give our all. Our coach pushes us and we push ourselves on and off the pitch. We stay focused and determined.”
The Falconets have finished as runners-up at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup twice but have never won the tournament.
Their meeting with Colombia provides another opportunity to reach the semi-finals and continue their pursuit of a first title. Akekoromowei says the squad remain united behind that objective under the guidance of Aduku.
Nigeria’s convincing win over England has placed them among the eight remaining teams, but Colombia’s victory against Poland means they face a side that also progressed from a tightly contested knockout match.
The quarter-final will take place in Lodz on Sunday afternoon, when Nigeria will attempt to move one step closer to ending their wait for the trophy.
