Inter Milan and Club Bruges set for first competitive meeting after 45 years

Published on: 13 October 2026

Inter Milan and Club Bruges will meet in a competitive match for the first time when they face each other at San Siro on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, in the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League league phase.

Despite their extensive European histories, the clubs have never previously been drawn together in an official competition. Their only previous meetings came in June 1981, when they played twice in Japan.

The first encounter took place on 4 June 1981 in the group stage of the Kirin Cup. Neither side managed to score, with the match ending 0-0.

They met again six days later, on 10 June, in the tournament final. Club Bruges won 2-0 to claim the trophy against an Inter Milan side managed at the time by Eugenio Bersellini.

The meeting at San Siro, 45 years after those matches, will therefore mark a new chapter in the clubs’ limited shared history. It will also be their first contest with competitive consequences, as both teams seek points towards qualification for the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League.

Inter’s record against Belgian opposition

Inter Milan will draw confidence from their recent record against Belgian clubs in European competition. The Nerazzurri have won their past four such matches, including a 4-0 victory away to Union Saint-Gilloise in the previous edition of the UEFA Champions League.

Club Bruges will attempt to end that run at San Siro and secure a notable result against Inter Milan.
