Troost-Ekong Calls World Cup Failure a Wake-Up Call for Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has described Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a painful disappointment, insisting the setback must become a turning point for the national team, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The experienced defender believes the Super Eagles must learn from the disappointment and implement the necessary changes if they are to return to football's biggest stage at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria missed out on the ongoing tournament after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo on penalties in the final of the African qualifying play-offs, extending the country's absence from the World Cup since its last appearance at the 2018 tournament in Russia.

Speaking to SuperSport, Troost-Ekong said the squad has never lacked the desire to represent Nigeria on the global stage.

"I think the motivation has always been there," Troost-Ekong said.

"All of us are incredibly eager to see Nigeria back at the World Cup, and missing out again only increases that desire."

The centre-back admitted it was difficult watching other African nations impress at the tournament, believing the Super Eagles also had the quality to make a strong impact.

"I would have loved to see Nigeria there because, when you watch the African teams performing so well, you cannot help but think Nigeria would also have put in a strong performance," he stated.

"Looking at the quality and talent within the squad, I believe they would have been ready. Many of the players have matured, and some also gained valuable experience at the 2018 World Cup."

Troost-Ekong also urged the Nigeria Football Federation to use the disappointment as an opportunity to reassess its plans and establish a stronger framework for future qualification campaigns.

"It would have been wonderful to see them compete, but I also think this serves as an important lesson," he added.

"We need to reflect on our preparation and identify what needs to change in order to reach the next level ahead of the next World Cup."

The former captain maintained that the players remain fully committed to the national team and are determined to improve.

"The players will continue working hard, sharing ideas, and doing everything possible to improve."

"I have never felt there was a lack of motivation or commitment from the players. I simply believe there are several areas that need to change, and this time those changes will be essential if the team is to succeed."
