Wesley Sneijder believes Denzel Dumfries will have to raise his level after completing a €20m move from Inter to Real Madrid, saying the Spanish club carries greater status than its Italian counterpart.
“Real Madrid are a more prestigious club than Inter, you have to play better there,” Sneijder said, offering his view on the summer transfer involving his fellow Netherlands international.
Dumfries joined the Madrid club for a fee of €20m. The 30-year-old full-back has signed a contract that runs until the middle of 2030, bringing his time with Inter to an end and beginning a new chapter with Real Madrid.
Sneijder, the former Netherlands footballer, was asked to assess the move for his compatriot. His central point was that Dumfries will now be expected to perform at an even higher level because of the stature of his new club.
The former midfielder drew a direct comparison between Real Madrid and Inter, describing the Spanish side as the more prestigious institution. In his view, that difference means Dumfries must improve his performances to meet the demands associated with playing for Real Madrid.
The transfer is worth €20m, while Dumfries’ agreement with the Madrid giants extends through the middle of 2030. At 30, the defender has committed the next stage of his career to the club on a long-term deal.
Sneijder’s comments focus on the standards placed on a player who moves to Real Madrid, rather than questioning the value of the transfer or the length of Dumfries’ contract. His assessment is that the move brings greater expectations and requires the Netherlands international to produce better football.
Dumfries’ switch from Inter to Real Madrid is therefore presented as more than a change of club. According to Sneijder, it also represents a step up in status, with the new environment demanding a higher level from the Dutch full-back.
The €20m agreement and contract until mid-2030 provide the formal details of the transfer. Sneijder’s remarks underline the sporting challenge that accompanies it: Dumfries must now prove he can meet Real Madrid’s standards.
For the 30-year-old, the move marks a new phase after his spell at Inter. For Sneijder, the key issue is clear. The greater prestige of Real Madrid comes with a greater responsibility to perform, and Dumfries will need to play better to satisfy those expectations.
