Simon Adingra has travelled to Amsterdam to undergo a medical ahead of his proposed move to Ajax, with Sunderland having given the Premier League club permission to complete the transfer, according to De Telegraaf.
The Ivory Coast winger is expected to become Ajax’s latest attacking arrival and could succeed Mika Godts at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The deal is now believed to be dependent only on the outcome of Adingra’s medical examination.
Adingra is making his way to the Netherlands as Ajax work to complete the agreement before the end of the transfer window. The Amsterdam club’s window closes at 23:59 on Wednesday, leaving limited time for the final paperwork and formal completion of the move.
Although the transfer has not yet been signed and sealed, Sunderland have authorised Adingra to travel. De Telegraaf reported: “Although the verbal agreement in principle between Ajax and Sunderland still has to be formalised in writing by the lawyers, the Premier League club has given the left winger the green light to board the plane.”
The medical is therefore regarded as the principal remaining obstacle to Adingra joining Ajax. Thilo Kehrer is also due to complete a medical in Amsterdam, with his examination already scheduled.
Ajax are set to take Adingra on loan for one season. They will pay Sunderland €3.8m for the temporary transfer and have secured an option to buy the player at the end of the loan spell.
That option is understood to be worth about €16m, giving Ajax the opportunity to make the move permanent for the reported fee if they decide to do so.
The proposed agreement represents a significant step in Ajax’s pursuit of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations winner. Adingra helped Ivory Coast become African champions in 2024 and was the subject of interest from several other clubs before Ajax moved ahead of the competition.
Several Premier League sides had also been monitoring the winger, while AS Roma and RB Leipzig were among the clubs interested in signing him. Ajax ultimately won the race to take Adingra to Amsterdam, securing Sunderland’s approval for the loan.
The move is expected to be completed well before the transfer deadline, provided Adingra passes his medical and the lawyers formalise the verbal agreement between the two clubs. Until those steps are completed, the transfer remains subject to the final documentation and the player’s examination.
