AC Milan midfielder Youssouf Fofana has joined Sevilla on loan for the remainder of the season, with the La Liga club holding an option to make the transfer permanent.
Sevilla confirmed the arrival of the France international through their official club communications, bringing an end to uncertainty over the midfielder’s immediate future. The agreement covers the rest of the current campaign and includes a possible purchase clause, although no details of the fee or the conditions attached to that option were provided.
Fofana had previously been expected to continue his career with Lyon. That proposed move did not go through, leaving the midfielder to make the switch to Spain instead.
The 36 appearances made by Fofana last season underline the level of involvement he had at club level. During those matches, he scored two goals and supplied four assists. Sevilla will now hope he can bring that experience and contribution to their midfield during the remainder of the La Liga campaign.
His move comes as Sevilla begin the season among the leading sides in the early standings. After three rounds of La Liga, the Andalusian club have six points and sit sixth in the table.
The loan gives Sevilla the opportunity to assess Fofana over the course of the season before deciding whether to activate the option to sign him permanently.
