Rivers United moved up to third in the Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after defeating Warri Wolves 2-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Goals in either half from Abdurrasheed Dabai and Chinemerem Ugwueze secured a second league win of the season for Finidi George’s side.

Dabai put Rivers United ahead in the 22nd minute, finishing a well-worked team move to give the hosts the advantage.

Warri Wolves stayed in the contest until the closing stages, but Ugwueze settled the match with 15 minutes remaining. His powerful volley flew beyond the visiting goalkeeper to complete the scoring.

The result takes Rivers United to six points from their opening two matches. Warri Wolves remain 19th with no points after two games.

The victory offers a positive response for Rivers United following their elimination from the CAF Champions League last weekend.

They were knocked out in the first round by Ivorian club San-Pedro after a 1-1 draw away from home and a 2-2 draw in the return fixture in Port Harcourt. Rivers United exited on the away goals rule.
