Paris Saint-Germain have ended Renato Sanches’ contract, leaving the Portugal midfielder free to join another club.
The 29-year-old’s departure was confirmed on Monday evening, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano. Sanches is now without a club and can move to a new team without a transfer fee being involved.
Sanches joined Paris Saint-Germain from Lille in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth 15m euros. However, he was unable to establish himself as a regular in the Paris Saint-Germain first team during his time at the club.
The midfielder subsequently spent periods on loan at Roma and Benfica before playing the previous season in Greece with Panathinaikos. Across his time with the Parisian club, Sanches made 27 appearances.
His contract has now been brought to an end, closing a spell that failed to develop into a sustained role in the Paris Saint-Germain midfield. The decision means the European champion is available to negotiate directly with interested clubs.
Union Berlin are reported to be among the teams monitoring Sanches’ situation. English clubs Hull City and Ipswich are also named as potential destinations.
Sanches came to Paris Saint-Germain after making his name at Benfica and Lille, but injuries and competition for places restricted his involvement in the French side. His loan moves reflected his difficulty in securing a consistent starting position in Paris.
At Roma and Benfica, he was given the opportunity to continue his career away from Paris Saint-Germain, while his most recent campaign took him to Panathinaikos. He has now left the French club permanently and is able to consider offers from elsewhere.
No new destination has been confirmed for the Portugal international. Union Berlin, Hull City and Ipswich are the clubs linked with him in reports, although any move will depend on negotiations after his release by Paris Saint-Germain.
The termination brings an end to Sanches’ association with the club that signed him from Lille for 15m euros in 2022. He leaves having played 27 matches for Paris Saint-Germain and with his next club yet to be decided.
