Published on: 14 October 2026

Real Madrid have had 42 goals ruled out by VAR over the past eight seasons, a figure that has renewed debate about the quality of refereeing in the Spanish championship.

The ranking, highlighted by the Catalan press, places the Madrid club clear at the top and has again focused attention on the impact of technology on football.

Atletico and Villarreal are the nearest challengers, with 22 goals each overturned by VAR – almost half Real Madrid’s total. Barcelona are seventh in the list, with 19 disallowed goals.

Across the period covered, Real Madrid have averaged about 4.6 goals overturned per season. Barcelona’s average is 2.1, according to derbyderbyderby.it.
