Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford described the 2-2 draw with Everton as “Very disappointing” after his side conceded a late equaliser in a dramatic finish.
Everton levelled the match in the 83rd minute, but Manchester United appeared to have reclaimed the lead when Benjamin Sesko scored five minutes later. The visitors were unable to hold on for victory, however, as Everton scored again in the sixth minute of added time to make it 2-2.
The result saw Manchester United let a winning position slip away after Sesko’s late goal had seemingly put them back in front. Everton’s second equaliser ensured that neither side took all three points from the contest.
Rashford, who plays on the wing for Manchester United, commented on the missed opportunity after the final whistle. His assessment was brief but reflected the frustration of conceding so late after his team had restored its advantage.
The match became increasingly open in the closing stages. Everton’s 83rd-minute goal gave the hosts fresh momentum, but Manchester United responded almost immediately through Sesko in the 88th minute. That lead still did not prove decisive, with Everton finding another equaliser deep into stoppage time.
Manchester United’s next fixtures will come at Old Trafford. On 10 September, Michael Carrick’s side will face Azerbaijan’s Sabah in the Champions League. Three days later, on 13 September, they will meet Manchester City in the Premier League.
Both matches will be played at Manchester United’s home stadium, giving Carrick’s team two successive opportunities to respond to the draw with Everton. The Champions League meeting with Sabah comes first, before the Premier League fixture against Manchester City on 13 September.
For Manchester United, the 2-2 scoreline means the team will move on from a match in which victory was within reach twice in the final stages. Everton’s late response cancelled out Sesko’s goal and left Rashford and his team-mates having to settle for a point.
