Reigning champions Rangers International moved to the top of the EUROMATCH NPFL table after beating Abia Warriors 3-1 in the Oriental Derby in Awka.

The victory in Sunday’s week seven fixture also extended Rangers’ unbeaten home record against their local rivals, with the Flying Antelopes now having won four consecutive home derbies against Abia Warriors.

Rangers took control of the match in the 37th minute when experienced striker Godwin Obaje finished from close range to give the hosts a deserved lead.

They doubled their advantage four minutes after the restart. Chidiebere Nwobodo found the net to put Rangers firmly in command, although Abia Warriors responded nine minutes later.

Emeka Obioma converted from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute to reduce the deficit and give the visitors hope of a comeback.

Rangers, however, secured the points in the fifth minute of added time when Akorode Daniel scored their third goal and restored the two-goal advantage.

The win lifted Rangers to 16 points, one above unbeaten Rivers United at the summit of the NPFL table. Abia Warriors stayed 14th with eight points from their seven league matches.

Rangers also continued their strong recent record in the fixture. They have now won four of their past five Oriental Derbies at home and have not lost to Abia Warriors in Awka since 2022.

After the final whistle, Rangers used their official X account to taunt their rivals over the result.

“Safe journey back home, @AbiaWarriors! Thanks for donating the 3 points as promised! ?? Rangers Int’l 3-1 Abia Warriors.”

The reigning champions had made arrangements for supporters before the derby, providing free buses to take fans from Enugu to Awka.
