The Flying Antelopes started brightly and were rewarded in the 17th minute when defender Chidozie Nwundu reacted quickest inside the box to fire home following a goalmouth scramble.
Rangers protected their slender advantage into the interval, but their lead disappeared almost immediately after the restart.
Sobemap levelled just 40 seconds into the second half, capitalising on a lapse in concentration from the Enugu-based side to bring the visitors back into the contest.
Rangers pushed forward in search of a second goal and enjoyed periods of territorial dominance, but struggled to create the clear-cut opportunity needed to regain the lead.
Sobemap also threatened on the counter as both sides settled for a share of the spoils at the final whistle.
The 1-1 draw leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg, with Rangers now needing a stronger performance away from home to secure qualification for the next round of the CAF Champions League.
