Borussia Dortmund have extended coach Niko Kovac’s contract by two years, keeping him at the Bundesliga club until 2029.

Kovac arrived in early 2025 with Dortmund 11th in the league. He oversaw a significant improvement in results, guiding the club to Champions League qualification on the final matchday before they finished runners-up to champions Bayern Munich last season.

“Together, we’ve set a clear course for development and laid important foundations for the future,” Kovac said.

“We want to build on that. We have a clear vision of how we play soccer, how we perform as a team, and what it takes to achieve our goals.”

Dortmund are currently second in the Bundesliga after five matchdays, level on points with leaders Freiburg but behind on goal difference.

They return to Champions League action on Wednesday, when they face Bodo/Glimt.
