Athletic Club claimed a convincing win over Atletico de Madrid in La Liga on Saturday, 5 September, after Nico Williams helped transform a quiet contest with two decisive contributions shortly after half-time.
The match at Athletic Club’s home ground began cautiously, with neither side taking control during a subdued opening 45 minutes. Attacking opportunities were limited before the break, and the teams went into half-time without having made a significant impact in the final third.
The pattern changed immediately after the interval. Athletic Club produced a sharp attacking response and caught their visitors from the capital by surprise.
Williams opened the scoring shortly after the restart, giving Athletic Club the breakthrough they had been unable to find in the first half. The forward then turned provider two minutes later, creating the opportunity for Robert Navarro to score and extend the hosts’ advantage.
That rapid sequence left Atletico de Madrid facing a difficult task and placed Athletic Club firmly in control of the match. With the home side already holding a two-goal lead, Oihan Sancet later added another goal to complete the scoring and underline the scale of Athletic Club’s victory.
The result gives Athletic Club six points from their opening three matches of the campaign. Atletico de Madrid have seven points from their first three games.
For Athletic Club, the victory was secured by a crucial spell immediately after half-time. After a first half in which the game produced little attacking action, Williams’ goal broke the deadlock and his assist for Navarro followed just two minutes later.
The performance also ensured that Athletic Club converted their strong start to the second half into three points. Atletico de Madrid, who had gone into the fixture with seven points from their first three matches, were unable to respond once the hosts had established their advantage.
Sancet’s late contribution provided a final marker in a match that was decided by Athletic Club’s efficiency after the interval. The Bilbao side therefore added a second win to their league record and moved on to six points after three outings, while Atletico de Madrid remain on seven.
