Nicky Butt: ‘Fernandes was the aggressor’ in Phil Foden red-card incident

Published on: 14 September 2026

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has criticised the decision to send off Manchester City player Phil Foden during the recent derby, saying Bruno Fernandes was the aggressor in the incident.

Foden was shown a straight red card for swinging his arm after being struck by Manchester United captain Fernandes. The dismissal left Manchester City with 10 men after only 23 minutes at Old Trafford.

Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage, Manchester City secured a 1-0 victory. Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the match in the 60th minute.

The decisive goal also prompted considerable debate.
