Manchester City’s winning run in the Premier League came to an end as they lost 2-1 away to Aston Villa, with manager Enzo Maresca saying his side failed to take their opportunities and defended poorly for both goals.
City had won their first seven league matches of the season before suffering their first defeat at Villa Park. Maresca said the result was influenced by his team’s inability to convert chances, while also acknowledging the need for an element of fortune in tight matches.
“Sometimes you need a bit of luck,” Maresca said.
The Manchester City manager also criticised the way his players handled the situations that led to Aston Villa’s goals, identifying those moments as a key reason for the loss.
Manchester City will return to action on 28 October when they face Brighton in the League Cup.
