Manchester United are close to agreeing a new long-term contract with 17-year-old winger Noah Ajayi, who is preparing to sign his first professional deal with the club.
Ajayi has developed through United’s academy since moving to England from Germany at the age of 10. The 6ft 2in attacker can operate on either flank and has impressed during his progress through the age groups at Carrington, including academy chief Stephen Torpey, according to Sky Sports.
His form has attracted interest from clubs in England and elsewhere in Europe. However, Ajayi’s future now appears likely to remain at Old Trafford as he prepares to continue his career with Manchester United.
The forward scored seven goals in 18 Premier League 2 appearances last season, underlining the potential that has made him a target for several clubs across Europe.
Ajayi was born in Hamburg to a Nigerian father and German mother. He began his youth career with German club TSV Sasel before joining the Manchester United academy.
He is also a Germany youth international. During the spring of 2026, Ajayi represented the Germany national under-19 football team in qualification for the 2026 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
The expected agreement represents positive news for United’s youth structure, particularly after uncertainty emerged over another highly rated prospect, JJ Gabriel.
TEAMtalk reported exclusively on August 13 that Manchester United were concerned Gabriel could leave the club. On Tuesday, it emerged that the player had made clear he wanted to depart Old Trafford.
The Athletic subsequently reported that United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was working to prevent Gabriel from leaving.
“The matter has come to a head after Gabriel informed United he wants to leave and handed in a letter of de-registration. United have no intention of granting that request and are hopeful a resolution can be found.
“The Premier League club acknowledge he is an exceptional talent and are trying to keep him. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is aware of the matter, and United executives are making efforts to persuade Gabriel to stay.
“But they are investigating whether they are powerless to halt his exit once he turns 16 on October 6 if he has a European passport.”
Ajayi’s proposed contract means United are on the verge of securing one of their most promising young players, despite the separate uncertainty surrounding Gabriel.
