Jorthy Mokio scored twice as Ajax secured a convincing 5-2 win away to Groningen on Sunday in the ninth round of the Dutch league.
The 18-year-old defensive midfielder, who is of Congolese origin, struck twice in the second half to help Ajax complete a dominant performance on the road.
Mokio opened his account in the 69th minute before adding a second goal six minutes later. His quickfire double capped an impressive spell in front of goal and made a significant contribution to Ajax’s victory.
The youngster also completed the full match, underlining the trust placed in him by his manager. Usually tasked with protecting the midfield, Mokio showed against Groningen that he can also provide an attacking threat when opportunities arise.
The performance represents another important step in his development. At 18, Mokio is continuing to gain experience at the highest level and has demonstrated that he can make an impact for Ajax in more than one area of the pitch.
His two goals should bring him further attention during the season as he looks to establish himself more firmly in the Ajax team.
Ajax will next play their second match of the league phase of the Conference League, when they face Atalanta.
