Ipswich Town completed a dramatic late comeback to beat Fulham 2-1 at Portman Road on Saturday, despite appearances from Nigeria internationals Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.
Iwobi made his sixth Premier League appearance of the campaign for Fulham, starting the match before being replaced by Emile Smith Rowe in the 87th minute. Bassey played the entire game, anchoring the Fulham defence and also making his sixth league appearance of the season.
The first half was closely contested, with neither side able to break the deadlock. Fulham eventually took the lead 10 minutes after the restart when Ryan Sessegnon reacted quickest to a loose ball following a corner.
Sessegnon created space for himself before sending a precise left-footed finish beyond Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton and into the bottom-right corner.
Fulham appeared set to hold on to their advantage as the match entered its final stages, but Ipswich increased the pressure after making late tactical changes.
The hosts were rewarded in the 88th minute, just moments after Iwobi had left the field. Abdoul Ouattara collected the ball outside the penalty area and struck a powerful left-footed effort into the bottom-left corner to bring Ipswich level.
The equaliser shifted the momentum firmly in favour of the home side, and Ipswich completed the turnaround in the second minute of stoppage time.
Jack Clarke delivered a precise cross from a set-piece, giving Ipswich captain Dara O’Shea the opportunity to attack the ball. O’Shea met it with a powerful close-range header, sending the effort into the top-left corner and sparking celebrations at Portman Road.
The 2-1 victory secured three important points for Ipswich Town, while Fulham and their Nigerian players were left without a reward after surrendering their lead in the closing minutes.
For Fulham, Sessegnon’s opener had threatened to settle a game that had remained tight for long periods. However, Ouattara’s late equaliser and O’Shea’s stoppage-time header turned the contest around and handed the hosts victory.
