Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has renewed his criticism of Florian Wirtz’s move to Liverpool, saying the Germany international would be performing better had he joined the Bundesliga champions.
“Florian Wirtz would play much better for Bayern than he does at Liverpool,” Hoeness told Welt Am Sonntag, in comments translated and quoted by Fabrizio Romano on X.
“I watch a lot of his games. They haven’t integrated him properly at all.
“In Leverkusen, he got every ball; in Liverpool, he’s just one among many.”
Hoeness was heavily involved in the transfer drama surrounding Wirtz two summers ago, when the then Bayer Leverkusen playmaker was deciding between Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
Wirtz ultimately chose a move to Merseyside, joining then manager Arne Slot’s project after Liverpool had won the Premier League.
Before the transfer, Hoeness had made no secret of his desire to see the player at Bayern.
“If I can have a dream, I would say that Florian Wirtz must go to Bayern. But that is my private opinion,” he said at the time, while acknowledging that signing the attacking midfielder would require extraordinary money.
After Wirtz completed his move to Liverpool, Hoeness questioned how the new-look side was using him, saying the team was playing “everywhere, just not around Florian Wirtz”.
He also said: “Wirtz is terribly sorry for me.”
Hoeness had described signing Wirtz as a dream and wanted to see him play alongside Jamal Musiala, another of Germany’s most highly regarded young prospects.
His latest remarks underline his continued admiration for Wirtz, although the Bayern honorary president’s repeated comments come after the midfielder rejected the club in 2025.
Wirtz has registered either a goal or an assist in each of Liverpool’s last three games. He is due to face Brighton this afternoon, with Liverpool aiming to move into the top four.
