Ghana reappoint Carlos Queiroz to lead Black Stars into new phase

Published on: 02 September 2026

Carlos Queiroz has been restored as Ghana head coach, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirming that the Portuguese has agreed to take charge of the Black Stars for a new spell.

The GFA announced the agreement on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, saying Queiroz would begin his renewed term during the next international window. His immediate focus will be Ghana’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Ghana are scheduled to face Cote d'Ivoire on 24 September before playing Gambia in Group C. Those fixtures will mark the start of Queiroz’s latest assignment with the national team.

The Portuguese coach’s first period in charge ended a few weeks after the 2026 World Cup. During that tournament, he led Ghana in all three of their matches before his initial tenure came to an end.

In a statement, the GFA said: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as head coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme. Following discussions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would begin a new term as coach, starting from the next international window.”

The decision reflects Ghana’s belief that Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and previous knowledge of the Black Stars will be valuable during the next stage of the team’s development.

His central task will be to establish this new phase with Ghana and guide the national side towards qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The upcoming matches against Cote d'Ivoire and Gambia will therefore provide the first test of the coach’s renewed leadership.

Queiroz returns to the role after having already overseen Ghana at the 2026 World Cup. His second spell now begins with the national team preparing for a fresh qualifying campaign and a place at the next edition of the continental tournament.
