Frosinone maintain Serie A momentum with 5-1 win over Lecce

Frosinone continued their impressive start to the Serie A season by beating Lecce 5-1, securing a fourth consecutive home victory for the first time in the club’s Italian top-flight history.

The hosts had already scored a league-high nine goals in the opening 30 minutes of their Serie A matches this season, and they threatened early again when Fares Ghedjemis met Antonio Raimondo’s cross in the first minute. Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone denied him.

Falcone was tested again soon afterwards, pushing away Giacomo Calo’s powerful effort. At the other end, Lorenzo Palmisani produced an excellent save to keep out Joel Monteiro’s curling attempt from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Frosinone took the lead after 25 minutes. Ghedjemis laid the ball off to Matteo Cichella on the edge of the Lecce penalty area, and Cichella struck first time into the net for his first Serie A goal.

The home side missed a chance to extend their advantage seven minutes later when Giorgi Kvernadze broke clear during a rapid counter-attack. He had time and space but saw his effort pushed wide by Falcone.

Kvernadze made amends shortly before half-time by winning a penalty, which Calo converted confidently to put Frosinone 2-0 ahead.

Lecce were unhappy with the decision after their own penalty appeals had been rejected by referee Rosario Abisso and VAR just moments earlier.

Eusebio Di Francesco’s team made a positive start to the second half, but Youssef Maleh sent a shot high over Palmisani’s goal.

Frosinone soon regained control. Ghedjemis was denied by Falcone once more, before the Lecce goalkeeper made an even better save from the resulting corner to keep out Anthony Oyono’s header.

The contest was effectively settled before the hour mark. Kvernadze released the in-form Raimondo with a perfectly weighted through ball, and the striker made no mistake from close range, beating Falcone to score his eighth league goal of the season.

Frosinone continued to create openings, and substitute Daniel Birligea added a fourth just two minutes after coming on. He appeared to have stayed onside and, following a VAR check, his first goal for the club was confirmed.

The hosts eased off during the final 10 minutes, allowing Monteiro to score a late consolation for Lecce.

Birligea restored Frosinone’s four-goal advantage in added time, finishing to claim his second goal of the match and complete the 5-1 scoreline.

The result leaves Lecce with four defeats in their past five league matches, alongside one win, and they remain 14th. Sixth-placed Frosinone have now scored at least four goals in each of their last three league games, a run featuring two wins and one draw.
