Freiburg’s perfect start to the season ended as they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Eintracht Frankfurt, missing the opportunity to move top of the Bundesliga.
The result extended Freiburg’s winless head-to-head run against Frankfurt to nine matches, while Bayern Munich reclaimed first place. Frankfurt remain in mid-table after taking only one victory from their opening four Bundesliga fixtures.
The hosts made the breakthrough after 10 minutes when Younes Ebnoutalib marked his Germany call-up with a close-range finish from Ritsu Doan’s cutback.
That goal came against the run of play, with Freiburg continuing to threaten. Noah Atubolu made a smart near-post save to deny Jan-Niklas Beste before Jordy Makengo sent Derry Scherhant into space down the left.
Scherhant had missed an earlier opportunity but made no mistake this time, cutting inside before placing his shot into the bottom corner to level the match.
Freiburg’s parity lasted only two minutes. Jonathan Burkardt restored Frankfurt’s advantage with his sixth career goal against Freiburg, a personal best in this fixture, after Robin Koch headed a corner back into the danger area.
Adi Hutter’s side went into half-time in front, although they were fortunate to do so. Matthias Ginter fired wide for Freiburg, while Scherhant’s free-kick was superbly tipped on to the post by Atubolu.
Frankfurt again struggled to contain their opponents after the interval and conceded at least twice in a sixth consecutive home match. Freiburg equalised for a second time three minutes into the second half when Yuito Suzuki met Scherhant’s cross with a powerful volley at the back post.
The match continued at a fast pace, with both sides seeking a decisive fifth goal. Scherhant, Doan and Can Uzun all went close, narrowly missing the target.
Burkardt came closest to putting Frankfurt back in front when he met Ansgar Knauff’s cutback from six yards. His effort, however, was kept out by a remarkable reaction save from Mio Backhaus.
Freiburg defender Philipp Lienhart then tried an ambitious effort that flew over the crossbar, before the intensity dropped during the closing stages.
Neither team could find a winner, leaving Freiburg with a point but unable to return to the Bundesliga summit. Frankfurt’s run of entertaining matches continued after 26 goals were scored across their first four games of the campaign, but they remain without a second league victory this season.
