Football Leaks hacker Rui Pinto to remain under protection after ruling overturned

Published on: 09 October 2026

A decision to end the protection programme for Portuguese hacker Rui Pinto, whose Football Leaks disclosures helped trigger an investigation into financial violations at Manchester City, has been declared invalid.

The programme will remain in place until a new decision is made, according to jn.pt.

Pinto has been protected since August 2020. The arrangements include accommodation at a secret location under police guard, identity documents containing false details, free transport and a living allowance.

His disclosures formed the basis of an investigation into financial irregularities involving Manchester City.

In September 2023, Pinto was given a four-year suspended prison sentence in Portugal in connection with the Football Leaks case.

Three months later, in November 2023, he received a six-month suspended sentence in France for illegally accessing Paris Saint-Germain email accounts.
