FIFA has confirmed that it is yet to reach a final decision on the leadership crisis engulfing the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), with further consultations expected before the international body determines its next course of action, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
The world football governing body said it is still examining the circumstances surrounding the mass resignation of the NFF leadership before deciding on the appropriate steps to take.
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the NFF Executive Committee recently resigned from their positions following concerns over the performances of Nigeria’s national teams.
The development created a leadership vacuum within the federation and triggered engagements between Nigerian football authorities and international football bodies.
Against that backdrop, Acting NFF General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and representatives of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) travelled to FIFA headquarters in Zurich last Tuesday for discussions over the situation.
However, FIFA has now made it clear that no final decision has been taken.
In a letter dated September 7, 2026, and signed by Elkhan Mammadov, FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer, the organisation said it was still reviewing the situation and assessing the circumstances surrounding the developments.
FIFA also indicated that it intends to consult key stakeholders within Nigerian football before arriving at a final position.
The planned consultations will involve representatives of the National Sports Commission, the current NFF administration and the various members of the NFF.
According to FIFA, the engagements will help provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding the crisis, the positions of the different stakeholders and other issues that may need to be considered under the applicable FIFA, CAF and NFF regulatory frameworks.
FIFA’s latest communication means that no immediate decision has been made on the administration of Nigerian football.
Further discussions with the relevant stakeholders are expected to take place before FIFA determines the way forward on the NFF leadership situation.
