Everton have made a bid for Monaco and United States Men’s National Team striker Folarin Balogun, with the Premier League club believing they can sign the 25-year-old for less than the French club’s £40m valuation.
BBC Sport understands Everton have moved forward with their interest in Balogun and are attempting to negotiate a deal below the price set by Monaco.
Balogun enjoyed a prolific campaign for Monaco last season, scoring 19 goals and registering four assists in 43 appearances across all competitions. His performances established him as an important part of the club’s attack and attracted further attention ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
The striker continued that form on the international stage, scoring three times in four matches for the United States. Their tournament ended in the round of 16, when they were eliminated by Belgium.
Balogun’s World Cup campaign was also overshadowed by controversy surrounding his dismissal in the United States’ match against Bosnia. FIFA decided to ‘suspend’ the red card he received after a request from Donald Trump.
Despite that incident, Balogun’s scoring record for both club and country has made him a target for Everton as they look to strengthen their attacking options. The Merseyside club are understood to believe Monaco’s £40m valuation can be reduced, and their bid represents an effort to reach an agreement on more favourable terms.
Everton have also identified Tottenham forward Richarlison as another possible target. However, the Brazil international is understood to have major reservations about returning to the Merseyside club.
The pursuit of Balogun therefore gives Everton an alternative attacking option, with negotiations focused on whether Monaco will accept a fee below their stated valuation. The club’s opening bid has placed the striker at the centre of Everton’s current transfer plans, although the available information does not indicate that an agreement has yet been reached.
Balogun’s output last season, combined with his contribution at the World Cup, is likely to be central to Monaco’s stance over his future. Everton, meanwhile, are attempting to use their assessment of the player’s value to secure a deal for less than the £40m figure being sought.
The decision now rests on whether Monaco are prepared to compromise on their asking price and whether Balogun’s position on a move becomes clear. At the same time, Everton’s interest in Richarlison remains part of their recruitment plans, although the Brazilian’s reservations could make a return to his former Merseyside club difficult.
