Dele-Bashiru returns as Lazio win strengthens Nigeria midfield options

Published on: 13 October 2026

Nigeria midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru made his return from a thigh injury as Lazio beat Monza 3-1 in the Italian Serie A on Sunday, October 11, 2026.

The Super Eagles international was introduced in the 60th minute at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, replacing Davide Frattesi and giving Lazio another option in midfield.

Dele-Bashiru had been out since injuring his right thigh during Lazio’s 1-0 victory over Bologna on August 24. The injury was reported to involve a tear, with the midfielder expected to miss several weeks.

Lazio made a fast start against Monza, taking the lead through Nuno Tavares in the third minute. Gustav Isaksen extended their advantage in the 23rd minute before Monza reduced the deficit shortly after half-time through Saba Goglichidze.

Andrea Pinamonti restored Lazio’s two-goal lead with a goal in the 88th minute to complete the victory.

Dele-Bashiru’s comeback comes at an important time for Nigeria, who are preparing for a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Tanzania in November.

The midfielder missed Nigeria’s previous international assignments while recovering from the injury. His return now gives head coach Eric Chelle another midfield option ahead of the qualifiers.

Lazio will also welcome Dele-Bashiru’s availability as he works towards regaining full match fitness and re-establishing his place in the team.
