Bayern chief Hainer ‘sorry’ for Wirtz as Liverpool struggles continue

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer says he “almost feels a bit sorry” for Florian Wirtz as the Liverpool playmaker struggles to reproduce his Bayer Leverkusen form.

Wirtz, 23, moved to Liverpool from his boyhood club in the summer of 2025 for a reported £116 million.

He has scored seven goals and supplied 10 assists in 58 appearances across all competitions since joining the Premier League club. The Germany international is yet to record 10 goal contributions in the Premier League.

Bayern Munich were interested in signing Wirtz before he chose Liverpool, but the German club were unwilling to match the English side’s offer.

With speculation linking Wirtz with a possible move to Bayern beginning to circulate again, Hainer played down the prospect of a transfer.

“First of all, I think Florian Wirtz is an exceptional player, there is absolutely no doubt about that,” Hainer said, as quoted by Sports Witness.

“I almost feel a bit sorry for him that he hasn't yet found the form in England that he had at Leverkusen, because we also need him in the German national team.”

Hainer said Bayern’s current squad meant recruiting Wirtz was not under consideration.

“We have a squad of such quality, we are incredibly satisfied at the moment and, as a result, it is not a topic for us,” he concluded.
