Coventry City endured a miserable Sunday as they were beaten 5-0 by Brighton & Hove Albion, with Nigeria internationals Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka both facing setbacks during the match.
Brighton established control in the first half when Koustoulas put the visitors ahead. Coventry were unable to respond before the interval and soon found themselves in an even more challenging position.
Their difficulties increased when Super Eagles striker Awoniyi was shown a red card following an incident of indiscipline. His dismissal reduced Coventry to 10 men and gave Brighton a numerical advantage for the remainder of the contest.
Brighton made full use of the extra player after the break. Malick doubled their lead before Pascal Groß added another, leaving Coventry with little prospect of recovering.
Lewis Dunk then scored Brighton’s fourth goal, while Ayari completed the rout to secure a convincing 5-0 victory.
Onyeka, who began the match in Coventry’s starting line-up, was unable to see out the game. He was substituted in the 73rd minute after suffering an injury.
The result leaves Coventry City with significant issues to assess following a one-sided defeat. The club will also be awaiting further information on Onyeka’s fitness, while the disciplinary consequences of Awoniyi’s red card will be closely followed.
