Tolu Arokodare continued his impressive start to life at Ajax by scoring for the fourth consecutive match, but the Nigerian striker’s fifth goal of the season could not prevent his side from suffering a 3-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven at the Johan Cruijff Arena on Saturday, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
PSV made a lightning-fast start, taking the lead after just four minutes when Ivan Perisic’s deep cross was headed across goal by Ruben van Bommel for Ricardo Pepi to finish from close range.
Arokodare, who is on loan at Ajax from Wolves, restored parity in the 23rd minute with a low effort that bounced in off the far corner, continuing his remarkable scoring run since joining the Dutch giants.
The visitors regained the advantage just before half-time when Lutsharel Geertruida marked his PSV debut by volleying home from a corner.
Ajax pushed for another equaliser after the restart. Still, PSV held firm before Esmir Bajraktarevic sealed the victory in the second minute of stoppage time with a low finish into the far corner.
Despite Ajax registering 19 attempts compared to PSV’s 13, goalkeeper Matej Kovar’s five saves could not prevent the home side from suffering another disappointing result.
The defeat leaves Ajax without a win in their last five Eredivisie home matches and six points behind PSV, although they still have a game in hand.
Arokodare’s latest goal will nevertheless strengthen his case for a return to the Super Eagles.
The striker last represented Nigeria in November 2025 during the 2026 FIFA World Cup play-off against DR Congo and was subsequently overlooked for the squad that featured at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
With his goals continuing to arrive regularly in the Netherlands, Arokodare’s current form could make it increasingly difficult for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to ignore his claims for a recall.
