Argentina thrash Benin 8-0 as Brazil reach Women’s Under-20 World Cup knockout stage

Published on: 09 September 2026

Argentina ended Benin’s hopes of building on their opening-day result with an emphatic 8-0 victory in the Women’s Under-20 World Cup in Poland.

The result was the biggest of Tuesday’s second-round group matches and left Benin facing a heavy defeat after the Amazones had earned a draw with Mexico in their first game.

Argentina’s win came in Group A, where Poland also strengthened their position by beating Mexico 2-1. The two results have reshaped the group after the opening round, with Benin unable to repeat the performance that had raised hopes of a positive campaign.

Mexico had been held by Benin in the first round, but could not maintain that momentum against Poland. Poland’s 2-1 success gave them an important victory as the group stage continued.

Brazil meanwhile secured their place in the next phase with a second successive win. They defeated Canada 3-0 in Group B, making it two victories from two matches and confirming their qualification for the remainder of the competition.

The result leaves Brazil in a strong position in the group, while Canada were unable to prevent the South American side from maintaining their perfect record.

England also revived their campaign with a convincing 5-1 win over Tanzania. After losing their opening match, England responded strongly to claim their first points of the tournament.

Tanzania suffered their second defeat in as many matches. The result leaves them still searching for their first points in Group B, while England have moved back into contention after a difficult start.

The second day of the group stage therefore produced decisive results at both ends of the competition. Argentina’s eight-goal victory delivered a major blow to Benin, Brazil became the first team from the day’s fixtures to confirm qualification, and England kept their hopes alive with a comprehensive win.

Tuesday’s results:

- Benin 0-8 Argentina - Brazil 3-0 Canada - Poland 2-1 Mexico - England 5-1 Tanzania
